Noella Noel

Noella is an abstract painter currently residing in Prince Edward County, Ontario. After leaving a consulting career in Toronto, she enrolled in an independent art school (DVSA) where she studied under British artist John Wilkinson. During this two-year period she explored my styles, but never looked back following a pivotal assignment to paint an 8-foot abstract painting.

She works in oil, acrylic, and occasionally collage. Her work is mostly large-scale. Featuring expressive elements; Noella’s work is greatly influenced by the abstract expressionists, and her love of modern art. Bold and full of life, her work is the manifestation of expression without restriction.

In my work I explore an internal part of myself that is not always on view. As a person, I am reserved, orderly and contained. My work, however, is bold, colourful and expressive. Working in the abstract gives me the freedom to let go and see where the painting will take me.

“The large scale allows me to have a more physical connection to the paint and canvas. Music is also important to my process. It helps me shut down internal voices and doubts and provides a rhythm. I paint in oil and acrylic but when I feel a need for a closer, more visceral connection I use other tools, such as oil sticks or graphite to make marks and sometimes I paint with my hands.”
